LAS VEGAS, NV - Twenty-two years ago this month, UNLV was on its way to a 24-0 record to start the season, an eventual no. 1 ranking, and no. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The player leading the Runnin' Rebels that year was Sidney Green, who would go on to receive All-America honors, play 10 years in the NBA, and have his number-21 retired forever at UNLV. Wednesday night, Green leads Florida Atlantic University against his alma mater for the second time in his six-year tenure at FAU. The game tips at 10:30pm EST at the Thomas & Mack Center and can be heard on WLVJ 1040-AM and www.fausports.com.
FAU (1-6) is coming off a 71-67 loss to Idaho State Saturday night in the consolation of the Dodge Holiday Classic in Reno. Pierre Tucker led all Owls with a season-high 21 points. Mike Bell added 20 while Quinton Young scored 12. FAU made a season-high 15 three-pointers with Tucker connecting five times. Bell and Young each had four. Bell leads the team with 16.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He also was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player-of-the-Week on Monday. Young averages 11.4ppg.
UNLV holds a 4-4 record and is coming off an 80-65 win Tuesday night against Gardner-Webb. The win followed a 79-67 loss Saturday to then-no. 4 Oklahoma State in the Las Vegas Showdown. On the year, senior forward Odartey Blankson leads the team with 19.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He posted 30 points against GWU. Beck averages 16.0ppg as four starters are averaging in double-figures.
The game will be a homecoming for FAU's Tywain McTyer. The freshman is a native of Las Vegas, starring at Durango High School. On the year, McTyer is averaging 3.6 points and 3.0 assists in seven games.
Green led UNLV to an 87-34 record in his four seasons. He finished his career with 2,073 points, second in UNLV history. He also grabbed 1,276 rebounds, which is the best in school history. He's one of just two Runnin' Rebels to post 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
The only other time the two teams met was February 22, 2000, when UNLV topped the Owls, 81-60, in Green's first year as head coach of the Owls. The game marks the last of a three-game stretch for FAU in Nevada.
