The Florida Atlantic University Department of Athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Courtney Hawkins as an assistant track and field and cross country coach.
Born July 11, 1967 in West Palm Beach, Hawkins was a silver medalist in the 60m hurdles at the 1995 World Indoor Championships in Barcelona, Spain behind 1996 Olympic champion Allen Johnson. Hawkins went on to win the 60m hurdles at the 1996 U.S. Indoor Championships and his personal best at the distance of 7.41 is the 23rd best of all-time.
"Courtney brings a wealth of experience to our program," said head track and field and cross country coach Alex Smolka. "His years as a world-class athlete and experience as a private coach for national-caliber athletes will boost our program immensely."
"He has trained with some of the world's best hurdlers and sprinters during his career and has worked with world-renowned coaches such as Jack Pierce, Leroy Burrell, and Tom Tellez."
A 1985 graduate of John I. Leonard High School in Lake Worth, Hawkins attended the University of Kansas, where he finished fifth in the 110m hurdles heats at the 1987 NCAA Championships.
Although the majority of his success came indoors, Hawkins won three times at outdoor meets in 1998, taking first in the 110m hurdles in Nice, Stuttgart and Ingolstadt. His personal best in the event is 13.17 seconds.
Hawkins retired from competitive running in 1999 and was director of New Track in Riviera Beach from 2000-04 where he helped post-collegiate and prep athletes with their running careers.
