Macon, Ga. - Florida Atlantic University Susanna Lehtinen became the first women's soccer player to be named the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman-of-the-Year as the conference announced the 2004 All-Conference honors on Wednesday. The Lady Owls placed three players on the First-Team, one on the Second-Team and three on the All-Freshman team, tying with UCF for the most selections overall. This is the third consecutive year FAU has had seven All-Conference selections.
First Team
An Espoo, Finland native, Lehtinen was also named to the All-Freshman Team, becoming only the second freshman in program history to earn First-Team and All-Freshman honors. She led all freshmen and the team while finishing second in the A-Sun with 11 assists. She set a new program record by registering an assist in five consecutive games and already ranks in the top-10 in career assists at FAU.
Denise Brolly earned First-Team All-Conference honors for the first time in her career. The Coatbridge, Scotland native led the team and was second in the A-Sun in points (35) and goals (14) while setting career highs in both categories. Brolly became the second player in program history to score four goals in a game and record two hat tricks in a season while also tying a program record with six consecutive games with a goal. She also became the first Lady Owl since November 4, 2002 to earn A-Sun Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors. Brolly was named Second-Team All-Conference in 2003.
No stranger to All-Conference teams, Katri Nokso-Koivisto earned her first A-Sun All-Conference honor and third All-Conference award of her career. The junior-transfer was a First and Second-Team All-WAC recipient as a sophomore and freshman at Fresno State. Nokso-Koivisto set career highs in goals (12), points (29), game-winning goals (4) and shots (53), while tying a career high in assists (5). She has three multi-goal games (third in the conference) and enters the A-Sun Tournament having scored a goal in five consecutive games.
Second Team
Janine Aylward returns to the Second-Team after a two year absence as she was named to the Second-Team as a freshman in 2001. The former midfielder brought stability to the defense, leading a defensive unit that has allowed only 13 goals, third lowest in the A-Sun and the lowest in program history. She ranks in the top-10 of every offensive category at FAU including second all-time in assists. The Levittown, NY native also became only the third defender in program history to earn A-Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors.
All-Freshman Team
Alicia Tirelli is one of only two freshmen to start every game this year for FAU. The Brandon, FL native was the first line of defense for the Lady Owls and added the occasional scoring punch. Tirelli led all FAU defensemen in goals, points and shots and was second in assists. She is only the second Florida Atlantic defenseman to earn All-Freshman honors.
Michele Fazzari played in every game for the Lady Owls finishing third on the team in shots (32), fourth in goals (4), sixth in points (11) and tied for seventh in assists (3). She scored the game-winning goal against Stetson to give head coach Brian Dooley his 125th career victory.
Gardner-Webb's Leeanna Woodworth, first in the nation in points, goals and assists, was named the Player-of-the-Year while UCF's Courtney Baines was named the Defensive Player-of-the-Year after registering four goals and nine assists. Campbell head coach Patrick Ferguson was named A-Sun Coach-of-the-Year after leading the Camels to an 11-1-6 overall record and 7-0-3 mark in the A-Sun. He was also named Coach-of-the-Year in 2001.
The Lady Owls begin the march towards their first A-Sun championship on Thursday in Buies Creek, N.C. at 4 pm when they face no. 6 Jacksonville.
