BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team is gearing up for a non-conference battle with the nationally-ranked University of Florida Gators Tuesday night in Gainesville. The game tips at 7:00pm at the O'Connell Center and can be heard live on WLVJ 1040-AM and www.fausports.com. The contest will also air live on Sunshine Network in central and northern Florida. It is available in all areas on DirecTV channel 635 and will replay on Sunshine statewide Wednesday at 2:00pm. The game features FAU head coach Sidney Green against his son, Taurean, a freshman guard for the Gators.
FAU (0-1) is coming off a season-opening loss at FIU, 65-62, last Friday in Miami. Quinton Young led all scorers with 26 points, including 8-for-13 from beyond the arc. Robert Williams had a team-high 11 rebounds. FAU trailed 36-27 early in the second half before going on a 28-10 run for a 55-46 lead. FIU then outscored the Owls 19-7 the rest of the way.
UF (1-0) is coming of a season-opening win at Jacksonville, 81-59, Friday night. Anthony Roberson led three Gators in double-figures with 19 points. David Lee had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Matt Walsh added 14 points. The Gators are ranked no. 23 in the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll.
Florida won the only other time the two teams met, a 100-42 victory November 27, 2000, at the O'Connell Center. Robert Williams is the only current Owl to have played in that game, scoring six points and hauling in a team-high nine rebounds. FAU is 0-6 all-time against SEC teams while Florida has won its last 24 games against in-state teams and all 13 its has played against Atlantic Sun Conference teams.
Besides the tie to his son, Green will also coach against Billy Donovan, a former teammate of his when the two were members of the New York Knicks. Carlton Screen, who begins his first season as an assistant for the Owls, also played with Donovan when the two helped lead Providence to the Final Four in 1987.
The game is the second of three straight for the Owls on the road. Florida Atlantic faces Miami November 29 in Coral Gables.
