BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University opens its 2004-05 regular season Friday night at Florida International. The game is scheduled to tip at 8:00pm at Pharmed Arena and can be heard live on WLVJ 1040-AM and www.fausports.com. The game is the first of three straight on the road for the Owls against in-state teams.
The Owls took part in two exhibition games as a tune-up for the regular season. Mike Bell, the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player-of-the-Year, scored 23 points and had 20 rebounds in FAU's 87-76 win over Florida Tech on November 11. Bell was third in the A-Sun last year with 18.0 points per game. He led the conference with 9.7 rebounds and was second with 2.1 blocks per game.
FAU also returns Pierre Tucker, who averaged 9.6 points and shot .390 from beyond the arc. Robert Williams (8.0ppg/5.6rpg), Kahleaf Watson (6.7ppg/2.5apg), and Jimmy Bishop (5.1ppg/2.0rpg) also return for FAU.
The 2004-05 version of the Owls will have a newcomer feel as nine players are debuting this season. They include junior college transfers Quinton Young and Rodney Webb. Young averaged 14.0 points in FAu's two exhibition games and shot 10-for-21 (.476) from beyond the arc. Webb averaged 13.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
FAU trails the all-time series 10-5, but has won the mast two meetings. The teams last met December 1, 2003, in an 89-87 win by the Owls at FAU Gymnasium. FIU holds a 7-2 advantage at Pharmed Arena.
Florida Atlantic will play at Florida on November 23 and at Miami on Novmber 29 before its home opener December 4 against Gardner-Webb.
