Volleyball Hits the Road for A-Sun Matches

After winning its first conference match, Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team hits the road this weekend as it faces Gardner-Webb and Campbell in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Owls have not lost to the Bulldogs in two meetings and lead the series with Campbell 7-2.
FAU meets GWU at 7 pm on Friday in Boiling Springs, NC. In their third year at the Division I level the Bulldogs are 4-14, 0-3 A-Sun on the year. The team's last two matches were 0-3 losses to A-Sun opponents Mercer and Georgia State. Sophomore Maggie Cornwall leads the squad with 182 kills and 172 digs.
Ashley Pridgeon is the second offensive threat with 174 kills and leads the team with 33 service aces which places her second in the A-Sun with 0.53 aces per game.
The only senior on the squad, Melanie Custer runs the team and has 482 assists for the year.
On Saturday, FAU faces a team that is on a five-match winning streak in Buies Creek, NC. The Camels hold a 7-8 record and stand at 2-0 in conference play. Their two conference wins are over Gardner-Webb and Mercer. The Campbell attack is led by Tabitha Turner, the current A-Sun Player-of-the Week, with 198 kills. She averaged 4.75 kills per game, 0.25 blocks and 2.00 digs last week in two matches. The sophomore also leads the team with 28 service aces.
The underclassmen laden roster is out-blocking its opponents by an impressive 114-68 margin. Another sophomore, Rachel Templin, has shut down opponents 58 times. A category that FAU has struggled in this season, FAU has only 72.5 blocks in 13 matches.
Sarah Dillon runs the offense and has 443 assists, while Crystal Sieber is a mainstay in the back row with 204 digs.
As a team the Camels are 3rd in the A-Sun with a .208 hitting percentage and are second with 2.16 service aces per game.
FAU (11-2, 1-0 A-Sun) will counter its opponents with three strong offensive players in Kelly Paiva, Iana Andonova and Cayse Kaveny. The three account for 76 percent of the team's kills and Andonova leads the conference in kills per game (4.58).
FAU's defense is led by libero Makra Condill's 210 digs and is second in the A-Sun with 4.38 digs per game.
The Owls are currently on a five-match winning streak and need just one more victory to tie the longest streak of the season.
