Florida Atlantic University's baseball team has not hit the field yet this school year but it is already gaining recognition around the country. The newcomers on the team ranked in the top 60 recruiting classes by Collegiate Baseball newspaper's 21st annual release on the top NCAA Division I baseball recruiting classes.
With eight incoming freshmen and six junior college transfers to help fill the void after losing 10 lettermen last year, including three starting pitchers and two hitters who combined for 21 home runs and 92 RBI to professional baseball, the squad hopes to continue its run to the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic Sun Conference for the second consecutive year.
"Recruiting coordinator John McCormack has put together a recruiting class that has the ability to step right in and fill the void of players lost. We expect our freshmen to see a good deal of playing time this season and are excited about their futures," said head coach Kevin Cooney. "This looks to be the strongest recruiting class yet."
The team will start Fall practice on October 27 as it prepares for the 2004 season. The team is expected to open the season at home on February 6 against Florida A&M University.
