BOCA RATON, FL - Coach Howard Schnellenberger met with the local media for his weekly pre-game press conference. Joining Coach were junior defensive back Craig Roundtree and junior running back Anthony Jackson.
Reporters were also given the opportunity to speak with Illinios State University's Head Coach Denver Johnson.
Coach Schnellenberger Opening Address
"The team didn't begin the week as totally committed and interested as we have in previous weeks. However, after we stopped practice, brought them together, they made a significant effort to refocus and get back to business. We needed to because this is a very formidable team that we are playing and as you win games, and we have a streak of one right now, people will tend to spend more time preparing for you and stop spending time with their girlfriends. When the fans take notice it makes a real difference."
"The team is becoming more veteran, day-by-day, practice-by-practice. We are a million miles away from being veteran, but they are catching up on it."
Jr, Defensive Back Craig Roundtree
"We are focusing this week on improvement. Things that we can do better, forcing turnovers and getting the offense back on the field."
"This week is more of a game plan. I think Youngstown got out of their game plan. This week, Illinois State passes well, runs the ball well and almost has the same in both passing and running plays. They are a good team as far as execution. We have learned a lot about the things we are not doing, as far as not running the game plan."
Containing ISU's quarterback
"It will be the job of the front four or seven to keep the quarterback contained. When he gets out of the pocket, it is just another part of our job to stay in our zones and be mentally focused to stay with our man or area."
Expecting to win
"In the past we were young, we thought okay we are young we can beat them, but lets see what they give us, let's bend but don't break. But now, we have been together for three years or four years, and it is time for us to expect to win. When you expect to win, you don't get as nervous, and you expect to make less mistakes than the next team. We have learned a lot about ourselves both on the offense and on the defense. It is nice to know that we can score less and still win."
Staying with teams in close games
"One thing it does is build enthusiasm for the whole team. Before, the defense could say we are going out and do this. We knew the offense would do some things right. The more you see them doing things right, the more it makes you want to get back out there and get the ball back for them. It is a big confidence thing."
Jr, Running Back Anthony Jackson
Last weeks win
"It felt real good to go to YSU and win, but we felt that we could win by eliminating our mistakes. We just need to make less turnovers in order to compete."
Offensive Line
"Everyone worked hard to get bigger, stronger, and faster in the off season. That has helped to make holes for the running game. They are doing a great job.
ISU's Head Coach Denver Johnson
On ISU
"We are a young team with a great attitude. We are happy to be 3-1 and are excited about FAU coming in here to play.
"I was very impressed with FAU's performance against YSU. I know how hard it is to play at YSU and to get a win at their place. We recognize many of FAU's players because we have met them or we reviewed their high school films during the recruiting process."
On recruiting in Florida
"Our heart and soul comes from Illinois. Our arms and legs come from Florida. Florida produces great athletes. Normal is a nice town. We present a viable option. Everyone in our conference has players from Florida, and everyone we play has kids from there.
On the Gateway having four teams in the top-25
"I'm very proud of the Gateway Conference. We try to be competitive in the league and are improving upon that each season."
