Mazzarella Named First Team All-Conference

BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University's Pam Mazzarella is among seven Lady Owls who received Atlantic Sun Conference post-season softball honors, announced the league office on Wednesday. Mazzarella, who leads FAU with a .324 batting average, was named First Team All-Conference.
In addition, Candice Freel, Amanda Morin, Ebony Gray, and Lauren Evans received Second Team honors.
Morin was named A-Sun Freshman-of-the-Year while Evans, Jennifer Cavanaugh, and Jessica Sachs also received All-Freshmen honors.
Mazzarella, a sophomore first-baseman, was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. She posted 18 multiple-hit games and batted .431 over the last 17 games on the regular season. She is tied for the team lead with 5 homers and is second with 26 RBIs.
Freel (17-11) leads the team with a 1.63 ERA. The sophomore also leads FAU in strikeouts and innings pitched. Last year's A-Sun Freshman-of-the-Year has a career record of 43-17 in a Lady Owls' uniform.
Morin (18-11) was named A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week four times in her freshman season, including third straight times to end the season. She has won 10 consecutive decisions and went a perfect 9-0 against A-Sun competition. She started a conference-high 31 games.
Gray, a junior outfielder in her first season with FAU, is batting .272 and leads the team with 30 RBIs. She is tied for the team lead with five homers.
Evans was selected to the second team as a designated player. The freshman holds a .252 batting average with one home run and 12 RBIs.
Cavanaugh batted .280 in 27 games while Sachs helped anchor the Lady Owls at shortstop with a team-high 106 assists.
Florida Atlantic (35-27) is the top seed at this week's A-Sun Championship in Troy, AL. The Lady Owls face no. 6 Jacksonville State in Thursday's opening round action at Noon EDT. FAU is looking to win its seventh straight A-Sun Tournament championship. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
