BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University outlasted Wisconsn, 1-0, in eight innings Saturday afternoon on day two of the FAU "Worth" Invitational in Boca Raton, FL. The win evens FAU's record at 8-8.
Ginny Matthews drove home the winning run in the top of the eighth on squeeze play that scored Michelle Shirah.
The game turned into a dual in the circle as Candice Freel outlasted Andrea Kirchberg to improve to 4-2 on the year. Freel yielded just one hit and struck out two and walked one in the shutout. Kirchberg surrendered just three hits as neither team managed an extra-base hit.
FAU was facing Long Island in a late-night game Saturday in the final game of the day. In earlier action, Rutgers defeated Wisconsin 5-1 and FIU 3-1. UCLA picked up two more wins with a 3-0 victory over FIU and a 7-0 victory over Long Island.
UCLA and Rutgers will play Rutgers in Sunday's championship game. The other two match-ups on Sunday will be determined based on the outcome of Saturday night's FAU-LIU game.
