With a 48-25 win in the quarterfinals of the I-AA playoffs, Florida Atlantic University's Willie Hughley picked up I-AA.org All-Star honors for the week. Hughley was a huge factor in the Owls' defense as he picked up two turnovers and a touchdown as FAU won its second playoff contest of the season.
Hughley, a sophomore from Haines City, FL, led the Owls with 10 tackles (six solos and four assists) as FAU held Northern Arizona to its lowest point total since November 1. He is now fourth on the team with 68 tackles this season.
Hughley scored his second touchdown of the season in the third quarter after picking off an NAU pass and returning it 47 yards to give Florida Atlantic a 34-3 lead. Hughley is now ranked 28th in the country in interceptions. He set up FAU's next score less than two minutes later after recovering a fumble and returning it deep into NAU territory.
Head coach Howard Schnellenberger also received national recognition as he was named the Region 3 I-AA Coach-of-the-Year. In only the programs third season, he guided the 11-2 Owls to a playoff berth and now holds a 17-17 record at Florida Atlantic.
Florida Atlantic heads into Saturday's matchup with Colgate with a defense that has intercepted 16 passes. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS, and the game will be aired on ESPN2.
