Kristoffer Aarskog Named A-Sun Player-of-the-Year

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's Kristoffer Aarskog was named the 2003 Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Player-of-the-Year while the team placed a program record six players on A-Sun All-Conference Teams, as announced by the league office on the eve of the A-Sun Men's Soccer Championship. Aarskog becomes the first player in program history to earn Player-of-the-Year honors and the second to earn First-Team honors in consecutive years. The Owls placed two on the First-Team, two on the Second-Team and two on the All-Freshman team.
Aarskog, a native of Bergen, Norway, led the Atlantic Sun in total points (34) and goals scored (15) in 18 matches. He is currently ranked eighth in points per game (1.89) and fifth in goals per game (0.83). Aarskog was named A-Sun Player-of-the-Week a conference high three times and has helped lead the high-powered Florida Atlantic offense to a number three national ranking in goals per game (2.63).
Josh Garbee joined Aarskog on the All-Conference First-Team after scoring a career high 10 goals and 24 points for FAU. The junior midfielder from Brandon, FL, was second on the team in both categories and tied for third in assists. Garbee earned All-Conference Second-Team honors in 2002.
Second-Team
Anders Granstad earned All-Conference Second-Team honors for the second consecutive year after posting career highs in saves (90), wins (10), and minutes played (1732 min). The sophomore from Oslo, Norway finished third in the conference in saves and fifth in goals-against average.
Bjorn Totland received All-Conference honors for the first time in his career. The junior from Bergen, Norway, set career highs in goals (8), assists (7) and points (23). Totland finished third on the team in goals and points and second in assists while finishing fourth in the A-Sun in assists and sixth in points. After recording 12 assists in his first two years at Florida Atlantic, Totland is only six assists shy of tying Bjorn Masson's career assists record.
All-Freshman
Luka Lau, from Belgrade, Serbia Montenegro, becomes the program's first defender since 2001 to be named to the All-Freshman Team. Lau played a vital role on a defense that allowed the third fewest goals in the conference. He recorded one goal and one assist for three points.
Walter Yoder, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, scored one goal and assisted on another while playing in 18 matches. The playmaking midfielder from American Heritage High School started the second most games among FAU freshmen and tied for second in points.
2003 Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Championship
The Owls head to Macon, GA as the #2 seed in the men's soccer tournament. It marks the third time that FAU has held the #2 seed. Florida Atlantic will play its first game on Friday at 4 pm against the winner of the Belmont/Stetson match. The team defeated both opponents during the regular season en route to its program record six conference wins.
FAU defeated Belmont 4-0 on October 25 in Boca Raton, FL. A-Sun Player-of-the-Year, Kristoffer Aarskog, scored his team and conference leading sixth game-winning goal, Bjorn Masson recorded two assists and Luka Lau scored his first collegiate goal. Anders Granstad recorded his second shutout of the season, tying his career high. FAU holds a 2-1 series record against Belmont.
The Owls defeated Stetson 2-1 on October 3, in the team's first conference match of the season. FAU broke a two-game losing streak against the Hatters as Aarskog scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes remaining from Josh Garbee, while Granstad recorded six saves. Florida Atlantic improved to 15-7-2 all-time against the Hatters.
