Finishing the regular season at 15-4 is a new standard for our program. The team has worked hard to achieve this goal. We also earned a second consecutive regular season Atlantic Sun title. We still have the conference tournament to battle for November 6-8.
Our trip to Troy State was an eventful weekend. It started with a Thursday night victory at home over Colorado College. It was senior night and an emotional time for all. Two seniors, Dee Dee Castro and Rhonda Jones combined for the only goal of the game. It was a fitting finish to the game. Rhonda and Dee Dee have combined for 4 goals this year. Dee Dee is also an important part of our strong defense.
Troy State posed a great challenge for us. We needed the victory to clinch a share of the regular season title. They were very organized and solid on the defensive side of the ball. Very little space was available for us to attack. They scored first on a free kick that surprised us. Down 1-0 at half, we needed to regroup and find another way to penetrate the defense. On top of that, we lost two players to injury. Our leadership brought our group together and we exploded for three second half goals to win the game 3-1. It was a difficult game, but we found a way to win. That seems to be the way we do things!
As my brilliant scheduling works, we have to go and play Florida State the next day. No break in the middle! So we are looking at 3 games in five days, on the road, taking on two injuries, in the rain and no rest in between. This sounds like all the excuses I used to give my dad when I came home after curfew.
"Well, Dad, you just wouldn't believe what happened tonight." "Uhmmf" "I would have been home 15 minutes early if it weren't for that , that, thing." "Go on" "Well, if that circus clown didn't rob the store, we would not have been detained as witnesses." "Get to your room and never come out again."
FSU pretty much punished our team. They were everything we expected and more. Even without all the negatives stacked against us, it would have been a difficult game for us. The experience will only make us better and I truly hope we get another chance. I was impressed with the fact that Coach Baker kicked the extra point instead of going for two.
The challenge for us is now set. Focus on the A-Sun tournament and prepare for success. I do not see another choice. Hope to see you at the tournament.
