Movies, Motorcycles, and Malls
There is nothing like a road trip to get you going. We boarded the bus to go to Stetson and Jacksonville this past weekend. It was an interesting trip to say the least. A couple of movies later and we arrived. Tommy Boy was the first choice. A little Chris Farley and David Spade will go a long way. Some funny parts kept my interest. Mystery Alaska was the second choice. Appropriately named, as it was a mystery as to why this movie was even made. The last few minutes were the only part that kept my interest. The team loses in the end. Just thought I would let you know.
Our conference has so many improved teams that every game is a challenge for us. Stetson is just such a team. Julie Orlowski has done an outstanding job in growing this team. I coached Julie when I was an assistant at FIU in the mid-80's. That makes Julie and me old! When one of my former players becomes a coach, it makes me feel like a grandfather. Better that than my son making me a grandfather!
A breakaway goal by Christina Chang gives us a 1-0 lead and we hold on to get the win on the road. Stetson had some chances to even the game and worked hard for the 90 minutes. They will surely be a team to deal with in the tournament in November. We are happy to get the win. The team is ready to board the bus and head out to Jacksonville. I decided to get a bite to eat before we start out to Jacksonville so we drive into Daytona to find a nice place to eat. Of course it is Biketoberfest in Daytona so every motorcycle rider ever born is here. The bikes are lined up like dominos. I am hoping that the team does not try and sit on one of these bikes. I can just imagine all of them falling down, one at a time down the line. The other fear is that someone decides to mike a life changing decision and ride off with someone into the sunset! My fears are based on the fact that I have nothing better to do than to think of these things.
After dinner, we board the bus and off to Jacksonville we go. The movie of choice this time is "The Italian Job". An interesting flick. A commercial for the Mini Cooper I would say. It gets you hooked. Right when the end is coming, we arrive at the hotel and I have to check in the team. They stay behind to catch the end of the film and I miss the last 10 minutes. That is the way it goes sometimes.
During our off day, we catch a screening of "Radio" at the theatre next to the hotel. The girls enjoyed the movie. I think every single one of them cried throughout the movie. I would recommend bringing tissues to this movie. I should have brought a pillow because I fell asleep. Boring. Just kidding. The girls asked why my eyes were red and I told them I just caught up on my sleep! After the movie, the mall was the next stop. Can't go anywhere without going to a mall. Spend Mom and Dad's money I tell them. Use the credit card, not the debit card. After the mall, we went to dinner and then get back to the hotel in time for the World Series. We have a bunch of Marlins fans (myself included). Marlins win a nail biter. Been there, done that!
Game day is here and Jacksonville is the opponent. We have never beaten them on their home field. They are coming off a loss to Central Florida so they need a good result. We start off slow but manage to score a great goal off the head of Rhonda Jones. She gets a second goal a few minutes later and we are off and running. Two more in the second half finish the game at 4-0. It was a great result. Rhonda's parents were here from Scotland. They have never had the chance to see her play during her time at FAU. It was nice to have them around for a couple of weeks. Rhonda has made such a difference in our program, I am glad they had the chance to see what she means to us. We have improved to 13-3-0 and 8-1 in the conference. We have only one conference game remaining this Sunday at Troy State. We have a game before (Colorado College) and a game after (Florida State). Hopefully, we will reach our goals, and score a few as well. Until next time, see you later. Brian
