JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Florida Atlantic University defeated Jacksonville 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville, FL. The win was FAU's sixth straight, all shutouts, and tied a team record for consecutive shutouts. FAU improved to a program best 13-3 overall and remains tied for first-place in the Atlantic Sun Conference with an 8-1 record. The Lady Owls have won 10 of their past 11 with eight of those coming via shutouts.
Rhonda Jones scored the team's first two goals to tie a personal record for most goals and points in a season while Danielle Castro tied the program's all-time assists record.
"This was a big win for us," said head coach Brian Dooley. "This win sets us up for next week against Troy State where, if we win, we can get a one or two seed in the A-Sun Tournament. The first five minutes were tense, but after we got the first and second goals, the game flew by."
For the fourth time in their last five games, the Lady Owls scored in the first 10 minutes of the game. At 8:26 of the first half, Jones scored her sixth goal of the season on a header off of a free kick by Castro. Castro ties Melissa Bobby for first on the program's all-time assists list with 14.
Jones would score again in the 24th minute when she received a cross from Denise Brolly and netted her seventh goal of the season from inside the box to give the Lady Owls a 2-0 halftime lead. Jones' last scored seven goals and 17 points in 2001.
The FAU defense would take over from there, limiting Jacksonville (6-9-0, 4-3-0 A-Sun) to only five shots in the second half. Castro led a defensive unit that held Ranveig Aas-Hanssen, tied for third in the nation in goals per game, and Inge Heiremans, second in the conference in points and goals, to just two shots combined.
Janine Aylward connected on her fourth goal of the season at the 53:50 mark. Kari Kaiser dribbled the ball down the right side and sent a long pass into the box. Aylward, directly in front of the net, shot the ball past JU keeper Sarah Scalese to make the score 3-0.
The Lady Owls would put the game out of reach a minute later when Christina Chang's short pass from the left side found Brolly inside the box. Brolly's shot sailed by Scalese for her third goal of the season. Chang, a freshman from Cooper City, FL, has recorded at least one point in each of her last six games.
Molly Keating and Megan Coyne combined for five saves and the shutout, FAU's ninth of the season.
With a win in their final conference game against Troy State on October 26, the Lady Owls can secure their second consecutive A-Sun regular season title and their first no. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament.
Florida Atlantic returns to action October 23 at home in a non-conference game with Colorado College at 6:00pm. Individual ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for seniors/children. For more information call 866-FAU-OWLS.
