BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University's football team participated in its first spring scrimmage. After over 100 plays, the offense defeated the defense, 42-16, in a scoring system that rewards offense in traditional fashion while the defense is credited for stopping offensive drives and for turnovers.
Two quarterbacks split the time. Jared Allen, the 2001 team MVP, started the scrimmage, while red-shirt freshman Joel Fosselman received the remainder of the snaps. Allen went 20-of-31 for 271 yards and four touchdowns while Fosselman was 8-of-19 for 108 yards. Fosselman also threw for three touchdowns and had one interception.
The day's leading receiver was Matt Prudenti who had five catches for 92 yards. Eric Harper had four receptions for 47 yards.
On the ground, Daveon Barron, who is trying out for the team, was given the ball 17 times and scampered for 107 yards. The trio of Anthony Jackson (11-92), Doug Parker (10-52) and Dekolan James (7-43) rounded out the big gainers on the ground.
"Both the offense and the defense have improved drastically since our first spring scrimmage a year ago," said Jared Allen. "The difference this spring has been experience. Both sides of the ball are running more smoothly. Today, I was encouraged with some things and discouraged with others. As a team, we are picking up on more things."
FAU will practice 3 pm, Tuesday, host a celebrity golf tournament on Friday as well as practice at 3:30 pm. Saturday will feature the second spring scrimmage at 1 pm, followed by a celebrity dinner.
