BOCA RATON - Both offense and defense came out ready to win the rubber match, with the special teams in place, the offense jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first three drives, playing a system that rewards the offense traditionally and the defense by stopping a drive recovering a fumble or by interceptions. The deciding game was won by the offense 51-27.
"We, as a team, got a lot out of this spring season," said Howard Schnellenberger. "We had the best conditioning program, since we ahve been here. Coupled with the weight training and spring practices, we have gotten a lot out of the last two months. The defense is muchly improved. The corners have better capabilities than a year ago. We need to stay healthy and get better pass protection. A bright spot is that the running backs are more line college backs." Mark Myers scored the first points for the offense with a 35 yard field goal. The defense held for three and out. In the third series, Andy Rosas hit the second field goal of the day, a 37 yarder.
The defense held on the next five drives, before allowing Daveon Barron to score on a 12 yard rush. The point after by Rosas was good.
The momentum shifted again to the defense, holding on the next drive and gaining three points on an interception by defensive back Jerrell Terry. The offense, led by Jared Allen, who was 14-for-33 equaling 192 yard and three TDs, scored on the next to last drive of the half when Allen connected with Anthony Crissinger-Hill from 17 yards out. The duo repeated the 17 yard score in the second half.
The second half was more of the same. Allen began by handing off the first ball to Anthony Jackson for a 28 yard carry. Jackson ended the day with 17 carries for 137 yards and one TD. That drive ended on a four-yard run by Jackson and the point after, by Rosas, was good.
The defense held for the next four drives, including a drive that ended on a Jovany Ward interception, giving the defense three more points. Joel Fosselman led the next drive a, five play drive that began on the friendly 40. Fosselman, who equally split time with Allen and ended the day 12-for-25 for 114 yards and 1 TD, connected with Darrion Porter for an eight-yard score. Myers' point after was good.
Allen was under center in two of the next three series leading the offense to score in each. The defense held for the final three series.
