Back in town.
I guess our trip was successful. Aside from no injuries or arrests, none of our traveling party got frostbite. Aside from two bumpy landings, the flight home went much better than our trip up to the Twin Cities.
We lost to Tennesee and Alabama. I think we should have beaten UT, but a bad first inning for Core set us back three runs. Danny settled down and pitched the best he has thus far, but the UT pitcher had a good curve ball and the biggest strike zone I have ever seen from an umpire. The old baseball saying is "nose to toes", but this zone was more like "roof to rug". It helped their guy more because of the "12-6" curveball he threw. The high strike played right into his hand.
Alabama was clearly the best team in the tournament. They are solid, if unspectacular. We got behind early and made a late run at them, but it was too little too late.
It was three degrees below zero when we left for the game yesterday! I don't think I'll complain about our next Florida cold front. The people at the University of Minnesota did a great job of making everyone feel welcome. Their coaches and support staff are genuine nice people. I hope that we can be as gracious to them when they come to play us next year.
The weekend actually made me feel better about our team. We played well against good competition. Some of our young players gained some valuable experience, and some of our questions were answered. We still have some things to work out, but I think we're getting there.
Matt Pali made the all tournament team. He only hit .214 so I guess the other first basemen must have really struggled. Matt did hit the ball real hard the whole tournament, but always right at someone. Maybe the press noticed and appreciated some good at bats which weren't reflected by his batting average.
LaSalle tomorrow and Wednesday night. The first games with our new stadium seating. Before I drove home at 1:00 am this morning, I turned on the lights to check out the seats. They look great. Should be a lot more comfortable for all our loyal fans. Enjoy them! KC
