DELAND, FL - The no. 33 Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team began defense of its Atlantic Sun Conference Championship with a 4-1 victory Sunday at Stetson University. The win improves FAU to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in A-Sun play. The Owls grabbed the doubles point before taking three victories in singles play.
With senior Doug Devriendt missing the match due to sickness, the rest of the team stepped up to breeze through the match. The Owls won both the no. 2 and no. 3 doubles' matches to claim the first point of the contest. Martin Jirak and F.J. Schofield teamed at no. 2 while Andre Buzzoni and Cristian Paiz won at no. 3.
In singles, Martin Jirak defeated Stetson's Piero Demichelli 6-2, 6-3 at the no. 1 position. Andre Buzzoni picked up a 6-2 6-4 victory at no. 2 against Vittorio Fratta. F.J. Schofield was the other winner in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2, win at no. 4 against Eduardo Richelle. FAU's Cristian Paiz was leading his match at no. 4 before the match was stopped after FAU clinched the win. Ernest Diaz was also in action at no. 6 and did not finish.
The win was the 10th straight by the Owls against A-Sun opponents going back to last year and including the conference tournament.
Florida Atlantic next plays at Barry Wednesday.
