CORAL GABLES, FL - In one of the program's most significant regular season victories, Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of Miami, 4-3, Thursday in Coral Gables. FAU entered the match ranked no. 48 in the nation while the Hurricanes were no. 18. The upset victory improved the Owls to 2-0 on the season while UM dropped to 0-1 after its season-opener.
The Owls claimed the first point of the match by taking victories at no. 2 and no. 3 doubles. The team of Doug Devriendt and Cristian Paiz defeated UM's Andrew Golub and Andrew McDade 9-8 at no. 2. Martin Jirak and F.J. Schofield also took a victory at no. 3 by an 8-3 score over Justin Kinney and Todd Widom.
UM tied the match at 3 with three wins in the first five singles matches. Martin Jirak won at no. 3 for FAU with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jose Lieberman. At no. 5, Paiz defeated McDade 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. However, the Owls fell in the no. 1, 2, and 4 matches to set up a match-clinching battle at no. 6 between Schofield and Joel Berman. After dropping the first set 6-0, Schofield fought back to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to seal the victory for FAU.
