Men's Tennis Wins Season Opener

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University defeated Lynn University, 5-1, in its season-opener. The visiting Owls, ranked no. 48 nationally, picked up two points in doubles play before taking three points on the singles side.
FAU's no. 1 doubles team of Doug Devriendt and Cristian Paiz defeated LU's Martin Carenko and Sergio Sancho 8-4. The Owls picked up another point at no. 2 doubles when Martin Jirak and Sandro Spotti defeated LU's Peter Veselovski and Raphael Almeida 8-4. Lynn's only point of the match came with a victory at no. 3 doubles.
In singles play, FAU's Devriendt, Jirak, and Paiz made quick work of their opponents in their respective matches. At no. 1, Devriendt defeated Carenko 6-2, 6-1 while Jirak handled Veselovski 6-1, 6-3 at no. 2. Paiz was victorious over Toby Croke, 6-2, 6-0 at no. 5. With FAU leading 5-1 at that point, the three remaining singles matches were stopped.
FAU (1-0) begins this season hoping to build upon two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Owls are also coming off their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship and are guided by first-year head coach Alex Alcantara.
The Owls next play at no. 18 Miami January 24 in Coral Gables, FL.
