TALLAHASSEE, FL -
Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of Florida 3-0 on the first day of action at the NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee, FL. Nicole Myers pitched her 11th shutout of the season as the Lady Owls (46-19) advanced to the winner's bracket in regional action.
Myers battled out of jams in each of the first three innings before settling down to retire 14 of the last 16 batters she faced. For the game, she allowed six hits and two walks while striking out seven. She improved to 26-11 on the year.
The junior allowed a lead-off single in the first before getting out of trouble by striking out Emily Marino to retired the side. In the second, Florida loaded the bases before Myers struck out Stacy Rosen and got Katy Berger to ground into a double-play to retire the side. In the third, UF's Ashley Boone led off with a double followed by a walk to Mylin Prieto. Myers promptly retired the next three batters with two strikeouts and a groundout.
Meanwhile, FAU was held hitless until the bottom of third when Jaime Sawyer led off with a single. With Jaime Melton pinch-running, Heather Wright bunted her over to second base. After a ground-out by Ninya Ybarra, Melton advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored on the same play on a throwing error by UF cather Bree Berger attempting to throw out Melton at third.
FAU held the 1-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth before Diane Sanchez laced a one-out two-run double to left center that scored Ybarra and Myers. FAU took the 3-0 lead into the seventh as Myers retired the side in order.
"It was a hold-your-breath type of game," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "Nikki did a great job getting out of those early-inning jams and Diane's hit was huge."
The shutout was the fifth straight for FAU while Myers continues a dominant stretch in which she has allowed only one earned run in the past 83 innings.
FAU next faces California Friday afternoon at 5:30pm. The Golden Bears defeated Connecticut 2-0 in Friday's first game.
