TALLAHASSEE, FL -
Florida Atlantic University was shut out by California, 2-0, Friday at NCAA Regional action in Tallahassee, FL. The loss drops FAU to 46-20 on the year and sets them up for an elimination game Saturday against either Florida State or California.
California (51-15) scored both of its runs in the third inning when Eryn Manahan and Courtney Scott each had run-scoring singles with two outs.
FAU had just two chances to plate a run against Golden Bears's starter Jocelyn Forest. The first came in the third inning when Nicole Myers was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a fly to center. The second opportunity came in the sixth when Myers came to the plate with one out after back-to-back singles by Ninya Ybarra and Ginny Matthews. Myers laced a drive at California center fielder Amber Phillips before Diane Sanchez was also retired on a fly to center to end the inning.
Myers (26-12) pitched a complete-game for the Lady Owls and had her streak of four consecutive shutouts snapped. She allowed eight hits, seven of which were singles, and gave up two walks while striking out six.
Forest, on the other hand, improved to 26-7, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six.
"I thought we played well despite giving up the two runs," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "We swung at everything high in the beginning of the game and became more disciplined toward the end. We just need to be disciplined hitters from the start of the game."
FAU will face either Florida State or California Saturday at 6:00pm. The two teams will square off in the winners bracket at 3:30pm. The winners of Saturday's games will advance to Sunday's championship game with a berth in the Women's College World Series on the line.
