Florida Atlantic University scored 21 runs in Trans America Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon, defeating Jacksonville 10-4 and 11-2 in a doubleheader in Jacksonville, FL. FAU, which took the three-game series, improved to 26-15 overall and 6-6 in TAAC play.
Florida Atlantic jumped on the board with nine runs in the first two innings of game one. L.J. Biernbaum hit a two-run homer in the first. Two batters later, after Mike Valdes was hit by a pitch, Shaen O'Connor blasted a two-run shot to give FAU a 4-0 lead.
Biernbaum, who had four RBIs in the game, had a two-out RBI-single in the second and hit his second homer of the game in the fourth. Alex Fernandez also drove in two runs in for the Owls.
Petersen Benjamin, who drew the start, improved to 3-3 on the season in five innings of scoreless work as he allowed just four hits. Tim McNab pitched the sixth while Greg Eubanks gave up four runs in the seventh before getting relieved by Nelson Lopez.
Ryan Courson took the loss for JU (22-12, 10-5 TAAC) after allowing four runs and retiring just one batter.
Game two saw Jacksonville take an early 1-0 lead in the first before FAU exploded for six runs in the second. Jason Sullivan had a bases-loaded two-run single while Rob Orton followed with a two-run single of his own.
JU scored once in the second before FAU added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 11-2 victory.
Travis NeSmith pitched the first four innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Jim Cooney pitched the final three allowing no runs and just two hits.
JU's Darren Truty took the game two loss after 1.1 innings of work.
FAU will next play host to Troy State, 7 pm, Friday.
