BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic University was defeated 6-1 in 11 innings by visiting Stetson University Tuesday night in game one of a doubleheader in Boca Raton. The Hatters scored six times in the top of the 11th to claim the victory.
Both pitchers dominated the contest through the first 10 innings as FAUs Chris Sutcliffe matched Stetson's Kelly Lightner. Both allowed just five hits heading into the 11th. Lightner scored the game's first run when Tiffany Tolleson reached base on an error. The Hatters added to their lead with an RBI-single by Katie Harrigan which made it 3-0. Mariah Cobb stole home to make it 4-0 before Alison Parker's single gave Stetson a 5-0 lead. Lightner, who started the inning at second base via the international tiebreaker rule, finished the Stetson scoring with a run-scoring single.
FAU's lone run came in the bottom of the inning when Kristen Stanley reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Kim Nicosia.
Sutcliffe (13-4) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven. Lightner (21-9) picked up the victory, allowing one unearned run on six hits and striking out 15.
The loss drops FAU to 40-18 on the year and 8-5 in the Trans America Athletic Conference while Stetson improved to 37-21 overall and 9-4 in the TAAC. The game, which took 2 hours and 45 minutes, was delayed 35 minutes due to transportation problems by Stetson.
