Boca Raton, FL - Alex Fernandez drew his fourth start of the season, first at third and parlayed it into a 3-for-5 plate performance, missing the cycle by a homer, in Florida Atlantic University's 12-1 victory over Villanova University, Wednesday night.
FAU entered the game with a batting average of .261. The squad exploded for 14 hits equaling its highest hit total of the year.
FAU drove across three runs in the second, four in the third to take control of a game which saw 15 position players used from the friendly dugout and 19 used from the foes.
While Fernandez's bat was hot, teammates Gabe Somarriba was 3-for-4 and Rusty Brown was 2-for-4. Regan Samaniego hit his third homer of the season and Mike Valdez hit his first.
Danny Core pitched eight innings for FAU, allowed three hits and retired nine by strike out. Core improved to 4-1 on the season. Nelson Lopez pitched the ninth. Lopez allowed the VU's only run on one hit and two walks.
Villanova started its ace, Brian Slocum. Slocum was relieved after three innings of work. He was charged with nine FAU runs after 10 hits and three walks. Adrian Schau pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed three hits, three runs, but struck out seven. Mike Ciccotalli finished the game.
FAU will next play host to Wagner College, 7 pm, Friday.
