Florida Atlantic University (13-7) battled Iona College Friday night on the way to a 10-4 win. Travis NeSmith, a freshman from Miami, earned his first collegiate victory.
Gabe Somarriba was hit by a pitch twice, a team leading 15 times this season, his first to lead off the game. The Gales then had several miscues in the game and allowed the Blue Wave to earn their first run.
Dean Devine, 3-for-3, led off the second inning with a hit and scored on a wild pitch pitch by Brian Baltz. Jason Sullivan and Regan Samaniego also had hits in the five-run inning. A two run RBI by Mike Valdes in the third gave FAU an eight run lead.
Iona scored two in the fourth off of Nesmith, when he gave up one of his five hits on the night. The Gales scored two more in the fifth inning off of Chris Della Rocco, who had a three inning appearance and gave up only one hit with five strikeouts.
Devine earned one of his two RBIs in the sixth inning and Somarriba got his only RBI in the inning to give FAU its ten run final.
Travis NeSmith (1-1) pitched five innings and gave up four runs, three earned to earn the victory for the Blue Wave.
Brian Baltz got the loss for the Gales with 2 2/3 innings of work.
Florida Atlantic hosts Illinois State, 7 pm tonight.
