BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University moves to 18-10 on the season with a 7-2 win over Stony Brook University (7-6). Mike Valdes led the team with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and a two-run homer. Chris Della Rocco (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory with a predetermined, three inning outing.
The Seawolves took their only lead of the game when George Kearnes hit a blast over the left field fence in the second inning. FAU countered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Valdes led-off with his team leading ninth double. Bobby Spano drew a bases loaded walk and Gabe Somarriba, who had two RBIs, drove in one with a single off pitcher Christopher Flinn's glove.
Chris Della Rocco gave up one hit, a solo home run, to earn the victory for Florida Atlantic. FAU holding to its planned pitching rotation saw Matt O'Brien pitch 2 2/3, James Callahan 1 1/3, while both Chris Wailand and Greg Eubanks pitched an inning each.
Christopher Flinn (1-2) took the loss for the Seawolves after working six innings and giving up seven hits.
FAU plays host to Northeastern tonight at 7 pm.
