Campbell University erased a 16-point deficit to defeat host Florida Atlantic University, 83-80, Thursday night at FAU Gymnasium. Campbell's Adam Fellers led all scorers with 24 points, including 6-of-6 from beyond the arc. FAU was led by Motiejus Reimeris who had a career-high 16 points in the Trans America Athletic Conference battle.
FAU (6-22, 5-12 TAAC) looked primed to end their four-game losing streak heading into the game as the Owls led 25-9 with 10:56 to play in the first half. The Camels proceeded to outscore FAU 31-18 the rest of the half to trail 43-40 at the break. Reimeris had 14 points at the half, breaking his career-high of 12 set last season.
A three-pointer by FAU's Clay Fuller gave the Owls a 46-40 lead in the opening minute of the second half before Campbell (6-20, 4-13 TAAC) began to chip away once again. An 8-0 run over the next 45 seconds, capped off by a Bobby Jones' lay-up with 18:12 to play, gave Campbell their first lead of the game at 48-46. It would be the first of 13 lead changes in the second half that saw Fellers score 16 points including four treys.
The Camels eventually took their largest lead of the game with 7:00 to play when an Emory Walton jumper gave Campbell a 72-67 advantage. A pair of free throws by Fuller with 3:53 left completed a 9-3 FAU blitz that gave the Owls a 76-75 lead. A trey by Fellers with 2:33 to go gave Campbell the lead for good, 80-78.
Earnest Crumbley, who tied a career-high with five threes, missed from the left side with two seconds remaining in an effort to send the game into overtime.
For the game, Campbell outshot FAU 57-percent to 39-percent. FAU outrebounded the Camels 39-37. The teams combined for just 11 turnovers, with FAU committing six.
The loss overshadowed 11 points by Jeff Cowans, which allowed him to set a new freshman scoring record. The previous mark was 389 by Marques Williams a year ago. Cowans now stands at 390. Robert Williams had 11 points off the bench while Crumbley finished with 15.
For Campbell, Tarick Johnson had 12 points, Damien Hannibal 11, and Jay Carter 10. Hannibal led the game with seven rebounds while Cowans led the game with seven assists.
FAU closes out the regular season Saturday night against Georgia State before heading to the TAAC Tournament February 28 in Atlanta, GA.
