As the Owls' initial football season comes to a close with today's dress rehearsal at Pro Player Stadium followed by next week's finale on Tom Oxley Field, FAU's recruiting season for our second class of athletes shifts from the evaluation period to the recruiting phase.
Since May 2000, our coaches have crisscrossed The Florida Atlantic Territory to evaluate this year's senior class. With 20 allotted days in May and nine allotted days during September and October, we've crystalized the prospects from 1,000 down to 250 of the best of the very best.
As the football season wears down, recruiting takes on new importance. Official visits are offered and accepted, visits are made, commitments are given. Signing will begins at 8:00 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2001.
Developing our preferred list, coaches devote hours to evaluating, comparing and ranking the players by offense or defense and then by position. Prospects are ranked by position from the best, down to the acceptable. It goes one step further, they are ranked 1 through 250, without regard to position. Many players are available, some are offered scholarships, and, only 30 can be taken. The second class could be a carbon copy of the first with 22 out of 24 signees calling The Territory their home.
The quality of FAU's football team will be determined largely by the quality of this second class. Big, strong offensive, defensive lines lead the parade to meet our needs. Cornerbacks with speed, quickness and tenaciousness are a close second. Wide receivers with speed, agility, quick feet, and sure hands are needed. Our list is rounded out with a linebacker or two, another quarterback, and a punter and place kicker to put pressure on incumbents and provide competition. Our nets are cast over the outer perimeter of The Florida Atlantic Territory, ever so swiftly drawing in our second class of players and fans to FAU Football to Boca Raton, home to FAU Football.
Potential abilities make us equal to initial foe Slippery Rock. But the rate of experience gained through practice, not game will be the difference between winning and losing. In some superhuman way, the superior level of play that comes through experience must be compressed into 130 practice days. The quality of our practices and practice games will be graded by the unforgiving scoreboard at Pro Player Stadium on September 1.
Before we leave this first trial run season behind, we'll take two final exams. Today at 1:00 pm, fans and players will enter Pro Player Stadium through Parking Gate 2 and Stadium Gate F. Homecoming scrimmage is at 1:00 on Saturday , Nov. 18th at Tom Oxley Field.
