Women's Basketball, Softball, Golf and Cross Country, 1994-99Â
Sherri Pla came to Florida Atlantic as a women's basketball point guard, a position in which she found a way to score more than 1,000 points, earn a spot as a career leader in assists and steal more passes than any other player in history (236). Along the way, the Owls shocked the Atlantic Sun Conference by knocking out the perennial power in the first round of the conference championship, with Pla sinking the winning basket. From 1995 to 1997, she spent her summers participating in the Sunshine State Games. As an all-around athlete, Pla was often asked to join other FAU teams as a way of helping the fledgling programs. Most notably, she joined the softball team, a sport she had never played, and quickly made an impact. She is listed among career leaders in triples, stolen bases and career batting average. She was recognized by the Atlantic Sun Conference as a second team outfielder in 1996 and as a third team member in 1999. Pla also received 1996 Atlantic Sun All-Tournament honors. She was a two-time member of the North Carolina All-Tournament team. While Pla was a member of the softball team, FAU captured three conference crowns. She also hit the cross country course on a number of occasions and picked up golf as a senior. During her FAU career, Pla was a four-year starter on the women's basketball team, was a member of the softball team, which tallied a 161-99 record, and participated in two NCAA championships, including the program's first appearance in post-season play. Pla then played professional softball (WPSL) in the summer of 1999. Following a stint as an elementary school teacher, she became a golf professional. She passed her Player Ability Test on her first attempt and was the 2007 Florida Long Drive Champion with a drive of 301 yards, finishing among the top 20 in the world.
