THE BEGINNING
The Shockers tagged FAU starter Dalton Robinson for two runs in the second inning to open the scoring. They added another off Reilly Witmer in the third to lead 3-0.
Â
The Owls logged their first hit with one out in the third inning. Wichita State starter Johnny Nuanez held the FAU bats in check for the most part. A double by Kyle Boylston in the fifth finally broke the shutout, bringing Eli Small from third base.
Â
THE TURNING POINT
Wichita State tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and then handed it off to reliever Reese Kortum. Kortum picked up where Nuanez left off, stifling the Owls for 3.2 innings before finally running into trouble in the ninth.
Â
John Martinez and Small started the inning with back-to-back hits, and Boylston drew a walk to load the bases. The Shockers escaped, though, with a groundout to end the Owls' comeback hopes.
