Matt McCall
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Florida Atlantic University men[apos]s basketball coach Mike Jarvis initiated his coaching staff hires in the summer of 2008 by announcing Ocala native Matt McCall as an assistant coach.
University of Florida[apos]s Director of Basketball Operations from 2004-08 under Gators[apos] head coach Billy Donovan, McCall contributed to two national championships, three straight SEC tournament titles and an SEC championship during a seven-year tenure in Gainesville.
McCall was an all-area basketball player at Belleview High School in the Ocala area before choosing the student life at UF over playing opportunities at smaller schools. McCall became the Gators[apos] team manager within a year of enrolling at UF, and quickly worked his way up to head manager, then graduate assistant coach after earning a bachelor[apos]s degree in exercise and sports science in 2004. He accepted
Florida[apos]s Director of Basketball Operations position after earning a master[apos]s degree in secondary education from UF in May of 2006.
[quote]Matt McCall is a tireless worker and a first-class person and I think Coach Jarvis has made a tremendous hire,[quote] Donovan said about McCall[apos]s move to Boca Raton. [quote]I[apos]ve always viewed Matt as one of the bright young minds, and FAU has brought in someone who will represent its program with character and class, who knows the state of Florida, and will bring the energy and passion necessary to be successful in his new role.[quote]
In just two seasons at FAU, McCall has already gained a reputation as an energetic recruiter and he helped the Owls bring in several recruits, including two from the Gainesville area (Greg Gantt and Dennis Mavin). Gantt garnered numerous accolades in his freshman season and was among conference and national leaders in scoring and three-point percentage while helping FAU improve from just six wins in 2008-09 to 14 in 2009-10, his freshman season. In addition to recruiting, Coach McCall also focuses on coaching the backcourt players and in-game adjustments. He also helps coordinate the many coaches[apos] and players[apos] camps conducted throughout the year.
In his hometown of Ocala, McCall has established `The McCall Basketball Academy,[apos] offered to area youth. Additionally, The Basketball Times has featured McCall as one of the nation[apos]s up-and-coming young coaches.
McCall is the son of Beth McCall and former Gator linebacker Wayne McCall (1965-67), now a prominent Ocala attorney.
