FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (22-22) rolled to an 8-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast (26-17) on Tuesday night in Fort Myers. The Owls will have a chance to split the season series when the teams meet for a fourth and final time on May 12.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning.
Marshall Lipsey led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a groundout. Later in the frame, with two runners on,
John Martinez made it 3-0 with a two-run double.
THE TURNING POINT
In the fourth, Florida Gulf Coast loaded the bases with one out, but only came away with one run as
Brayden Gilson took the mound to limit the damage.
The Owls' offense started to pull away in the fifth. With
Brett Patten on second,
Jonathan Lopez's ground ball up the middle caromed off the glove of the FGCU shortstop. Patten turned for home and forced a throw that sailed over the catcher's head. Lopez moved up to second and later came around to score on a base hit by
Patrick Ward to make it 5-1. Patten was involved again in the seventh inning when he doubled home
Ian Collier.
THE FINISH
In the eighth, a two-RBI double from
Nick Romano put the finishing touches on the offensive outing for the night. Meanwhile, the Owls' bullpen held a potent Eagles' offense to just one run on six hits. After Gilson pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth inning,
Garrett Grant took over and allowed just one hit in three shutout frames.
Reilly Witmer made quick work of the ninth to seal the victory.
