CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic softball team dropped a Saturday afternoon outing at Charlotte by a score of 3-1.
Redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds' third home run of the weekend was the highlight of the Owls' (18-7, 1-1) offense, but it was not enough against the 49ers (13-11, 1-1), who totaled 12 hits to set up a Sunday rubber match.
THE BEGINNING
Hammonds, who was 3-for-3 with two homers on Friday, was hit-by-a-pitch to lead off Saturday's game. The Owls then drew back-to-back walks in the top of the second inning but could not find a run.
The 49ers struck first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second and added another run on an RBI single in the third.
THE TURNING POINT
Junior outfielder
Karson Davey recorded the Owls' first hit in the top of the fourth. In the following frame, Hammonds put FAU on the board with a solo shot to close the gap to 3-1.
Hammonds then made her mark on the defensive end, robbing a hit to prevent the 49ers from extending their lead.
THE FINISH
Offensively, the Owls started to find their stride in the top of the sixth inning, with a single by senior first baseman
Yani Guzman and a walk by sophomore second baseman
Destiny Johns putting go-ahead runners on base before all were left stranded.
Freshman pitcher
Makenna Lee held Charlotte bats in check for the final 3.1 innings and did not concede a run, putting Florida Atlantic in position to stage a comeback in the top of the seventh. A Hammonds walk and Holtje hit put both on base, but the 49ers soon closed the door.
NOTES/NOTABLE
- With three home runs in the last two games, Hammonds now has seven on the season.
- Holtje has reached base safely in 17 consecutive games.
- Guzman has a hit in 11 out of her last 12 appearances.
- Lee's ERA drops to 2.52, currently best among the team's pitchers.
