Owls Win 4-2 on Day Two at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team traveled to Tampa, playing two non-conference contests, in as many days, versus a fellow American Conference foe. Senior heroics by Boca Raton's Maya Shanok ultimately gave the Owls the 4-2 win over South Florida on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls improve to 4-6 this season while USF falls to 3-7. FAU's all-time series reaches double digits at 10-6, and the winning streak versus the Bulls moves to three.

QUOTABLE
"Today, the team showed what they are made of," said Maria Alvarez, FAU's assistant women's tennis coach. "It's never easy to compete the day after a tough loss, and even after falling short in doubles, they responded the right way. They stayed united, played with grit and determination, and fought for every point in singles. I'm very proud of the way they competed and the resilience they showed. A special shoutout to Maya Shanok for clinching the match. She never stopped believing, stayed composed under pressure, and stepped up when we needed it most."

THE BEGINNING
USF recorded the doubles points with wins on courts #1 and #3.

THE MIDDLE
The Owls captured the top singles court with junior Panna Bartha capturing court #1 in straight sets at 6-2, 6-2, but FAU dropped court #3 in a similar fashion for USF to retake the lead at 2-1. Owl junior Malwina Rowinska tied the match with a three-set court #2 win 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to even the match once more at 2-2. With three courts in play and both teams fighting for every court, it would ultimately be decided on the lower courts.

THE END
Redshirt junior Katrin Pavkova broke her opponent's serve at 5-2 to win a three setter 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, putting the Owls back on top at 3-2, with play continuing on courts #5 and #6. Shanok came from behind to clinch the match for the Owls with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory on court #6. With the 4-2 score, freshman Alexia Patru's contest ended at 7-6, 1-6, 5-5 (30-30).

UP NEXT
FAU will return home for a seven-match homestand beginning Monday, March 9, versus Yale. The Owls will end the regular season at FIU on Sunday, April 11, and will then head to the American Conference Championship at Rice, scheduled for April 16-19.
