BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball earned a 7-1 victory over Notre Dame in the season opener on Friday night.
John Martinez and
Ian Collier blasted home runs, and sophomore starter
James Litman set a new career high with nine strikeouts. The Owls will go for the series win on Saturday.
THE BEGINNING
Notre Dame scored first in the top of the second, but the Owls didn't take long to respond. In the home half of the inning, with two on and two outs, Martinez connected for a three-run blast into the ND bullpen.
THE TURNING POINT
With the lead in tow, Litman was dominant over four innings. The Boca native completed his night with his ninth strikeout to end the fourth, stranding two runners on in the process. The Owls turned it over to the bullpen for the final five innings, and the trio of
Kide Adetuyi,
Carson Kimball, and
Bryan Boully held the Fighting Irish scoreless.
THE FINISH
The Owls salted the game away with four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Collier's two-run blast was a no-doubter that sailed into the palm trees in left field.
Patrick Ward blooped a single into no-man's land in left field to score
Michael Perazza and make it 6-1. Martinez then capped off his night at the plate with a double off the wall in center to bring Ward home.
THE BATS
- The Owls out-hit Notre Dame 11-5, led by two hits each from Martinez, Perazza, Ward, and Brett Patten.
- Martinez finished with four RBI.
THE ARMS
- Litman allowed one run on three hits. He struck out nine of the 16 batters he faced.
- Adetuyi conceded two hits in three scoreless frames. He fanned five ND hitters.
- Kimball debuted with a clean eighth inning, and Boully retired the Irish in order in the ninth.
