BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team earned a dominant 88-64 win over the Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls improve to 8-9 on the season and 2-3 in American play, while Wichita State drops to 3-15 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls opened the contest on an 11-4 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from
Madi Gewirtz and a
Jess Moors layup, to lead by seven at the opening media break.
Grace Carstensen extended the Owls' lead to double figures at the 4:31-minute mark, 16-6, after connecting on her first triple of the day.
Erin Rodgers' sole 3-pointer of the day kept the Owls' advantage at 11, 19-8, with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Shockers scored six unanswered to cut the Owls' advantage to five, 19-14, however, Moors knocked down a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go, extending the Owls' lead back to eight to close out the quarter, 22-14.
Vivian Onugha pushed the Owls' lead back to 10, 24-14, after a layup to open the second. The Owls maintained an 11-point advantage through the 5:53-minute mark after a pair of free throws from
Ineivi Plata. The Owls then went on a huge hot streak from beyond the arc, hitting four consecutive 3-pointers, three from Carstensen and one from Gewirtz, to extend the advantage to 23, 41-18, with 2:47 to play in the opening half. Wichita State got three back over the final three minutes of the half, but the Owls held a 20-point advantage heading into the halftime break, 45-25.
Florida Atlantic opened the third quarter on a 9-3 run, extending the Owls' lead to 26, 54-28, and forcing a Wichita State timeout at the 6:19-minute mark. Wichita State scored seven unanswered points out of the timeout, cutting the Owls' deficit down to 19, 54-35. ,
Michiyah Simmons answered back, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers and scoring a layup to extend FAU's lead to its largest of the day at 27, 62-35. FAU led by 24 points, 67-43, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Wichita State scored nine unanswered points to open the fourth quarter, forcing the Owls to call a timeout, leading by 15, 67-52, with 6:20 to play. A
Zahira Arizmendi triple and a Moors layup extended the Owls' lead back to 20 with just under five minutes remaining, 72-52. Wichita State just couldn't find an answer to the Owls' offensive success over the remainder of the contest, as FAU closed the contest on a 16-12 run to seal the 24-point win, 88-64.

NOTES AND TEAM STATS
- Five Owls scored double figures in the win, marking the first time since Nov. 14, 2022 that five Owls registered double figures in a contest.
- Simmons and Onugha led the way for the Owls, scoring 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Carstensen, Moors, and Gewirtz rounded out the Owls' double-figure scorers, tallying 15, 11, and 10 points, respectively.
- Onugha finished with her second double-double of the season, collecting a game-best 10 rebounds against the Shockers.
- Simmons and Arizmendi tied for a game-best four assists apiece, while Simmons also tallied a team-high two steals in the win.
- Florida Atlantic dominated in the first three quarters of the game, outscoring the Shockers 22-14 in the first, 23-11 in the second, and 22-18 in the third.
- The Owls also outshot the Shockers from the field, 51.6 percent to 33.8 percent, and from beyond the arc, 42.3 percent to 15 percent.
- FAU also had advantages in rebounds, 44-36, points off turnovers, 21-17, and points in the paint, 42-38.
