Owls Take Down FIU to Stay Unbeaten at Home

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men's soccer improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the American Conference with a 2-0 shutout of FIU (4-3-2, 2-1) on Friday night. The Owls are 5-0 at the FAU Soccer Stadium and have not conceded a goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Owls found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. On a cross into the box from Fabrizio Cubeddu, FIU's Mathys Lefebvre bear-hugged Eli Conway, and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Conway stepped up and buried the resulting PK in the lower-left corner to put the Owls up 1-0.
From there, the Owls dug in and defended. The Panthers threw everything toward the Florida Atlantic goal but could not crack the FAU backline and goalkeeper Alfred Mikkelsen. In the final minute, with everyone pushed forward for FIU, the Owls cleared a corner kick, and Mamadou Diarra found himself on a breakaway going the other way. The American Conference Preseason Player of the Year made no mistake, slotting it past FIU goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren to seal the victory.
Mikkelsen finished with four saves and recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season (four solo, one combined). The Owls launched 15 shot attempts toward Van Haveren, with six on goal.
