BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 21 Florida Atlantic softball team was defeated by South Florida on Saturday afternoon by a score of 7-3 to tie the three-game series.
In their second conference loss, the Owls (33-7, 12-2) played from behind for most of the game against the Bulls (30-11-1, 9-4-1) but remained within striking distance, loading the bases multiple times for potential tying runs.
Jaden Martinez made the start in the circle and was the first of three pitchers to see playing time through the afternoon. She falls to 4-4 on the season.
The Bulls struck first with a solo shot to right field in the top of the second inning, but the Owls tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom frame with a double from team hits leader and freshman outfielder
Bella Foran.
South Florida responded with one more run in each of the next two innings and added two more in the top of the fifth to go up 5-1.
The Owls found success with the top of the lineup at the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Three consecutive hits led to the bases loaded with one out before two popups retired the side.
After surrendering another in the top of the sixth to trail 6-1, Florida Atlantic juiced the bases for the second straight series of at-bats and found two runs off a hit from
Kiley Channell to close the gap to 6-3. The sophomore shortstop was then caught before she could reach an extra base for the third out to end the inning.
USF loaded the bases themselves in the top of the seventh and earned their final run off a single. The Owls prevented more from being scored with a unique double play that saw Foran toss the ball to the Owls' third baseman, who then forced out the second runner with a throw to first.
Florida Atlantic went 1-2-3 in the final at-bats to close the game.
- With a 2-for-4 day at the plate and 2 RBI, Channell extended her hit streak to 10 games.
- Redshirt sophomore outfielder Kylie Hammonds has reached base in 36 out of 40 games this season.
- The freshman duo of Foran and Destiny Johns each recorded two hits. The former took the team lead in multi-hit games this season with 16, while the latter is in second place with 15.
- As a team, the Owls have recorded 7+ hits in 10 straight outings and have had at least five in 38 out of 40 games.
The Owls will take the field for the series' rubber match on Sunday with a 12 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+.
