Owls Host North Texas in American Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls open American Conference play on Tuesday, welcoming the North Texas Mean Green for a 7 p.m. tip at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Fans can also watch the game live on ESPN+.

A LOOK AT THE OWLS

Florida Atlantic enters American play at 6-6 overall and after earning a 60-57 win over FIU in the Owls' non-conference finale.
As a team, the Owls currently rank in the top five in the American in several categories, ranking third in the league in bench points per game (25.6) and steals per game (10.5), and fifth in scoring defense (64.6), 3-point attempts per game (22.2), 3-pointers made per game (6.9), and turnovers forced per game (19.2).
Offensively FAU is led by Vivian Onugha and Destyne Jackson. Onugha boasts a team-leading 9.3 points per game, and Jackson ranks second on the team, averaging 8.4 points per game this season.
On the glass, the Owls are led by Haley Walker and Onugha. Walker has collected a team-leading 6.8 rebounds per game, while Onugha has tallied 5.7 boards per contest.
Jess Moors leads the Owls in assists, dishing out a team-best 2.6 assists per game. Moors also leads the team in steals, collecting a team-high 2.2 steals per game entering conference play.
Madi Gewirtz is the Owls' blocking leader, recording 1.2 blocks per game this season.

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS

North Texas enters Tuesday's conference opener at 6-6 overall and will look to snap a three-game skid.
The Mean Green are paced offensively by Megan Nestor and Aysia Proctor, averaging 12.2 and 11.3 points per game, respectively.
Nestor also leads North Texas on the glass, collecting a team-best 11.8 rebounds per game.
Proctor is the Mean Green's steals leader, tallying 1.5 steals per game.
North Texas' assists leader is Andi Schissler, who has dished out 2.5 assists per game this season.
Tionna Lidge paces the Mean Green in blocks, recording 0.8 blocks per game entering conference play.

SERIES HISTORY

North Texas leads the series between the Owls and the Mean Green, 12-11. However, the Owls lead the series 6-4 when playing in Boca Raton. The Owls will look to snap a four-game skid against the Mean Green. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Owls fell 73-61 against the Mean Green on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, in Boca Raton. FAU last earned a win over North Texas on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, earning a 66-61 win in Boca Raton.

LAST TIME OUT: AT FIU

The Owls closed out non-conference play, earning a 60-57 win over the FIU Panthers.
Walker led the way for the Owls, scoring a career-best 19 points, shooting 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field, 50 percent (1-of-2) from beyond the arc, and knocking down four free throws. She also narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine boards, in addition to adding a team-high three assists and two steals.
Simmons and Arizmendi also finished in double figures for the Owls, scoring 10 points each.
Gewirtz tallied a career-high four blocks, and Ineivi Plata tallied a team-best three steals against the Panthers.
Florida Atlantic outscored FIU in the second, 15-11, and fourth quarters, 25-21.
The Owls outshot the Panthers at all three levels, outshooting the Panthers 39.6 to 29.2 percent from the floor, 35 to 27.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.3 to 65 percent from the line.
FAU also outpaced FIU in fast break points, 13 to 11.
