KENNESAW, Ga. – The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team moves to 2-0 on the season, notching Coach Freeland's first road win at Florida Atlantic with a 69-68 victory over Kennesaw State on Saturday at VyStar Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls trailed for much of the first quarter before
Michiyah Simmons tied it at 10 with 4:33 left to go in the first. The game began to pick up speed, going back and forth, ending the first quarter with Florida Atlantic leading 19-16 off a
Destyne Jackson 3-pointer.
FAU started the second quarter strong, extending their lead to 26-19 in the first two minutes. Kennesaw State cut the Florida Atlantic lead to three at 29-26 by the media timeout. Jackson put the Owls' lead back to six with 30 seconds remaining in the half. The Owls entered halftime with a 37-31 lead.
To start the third quarter, Kennesaw State committed three team fouls, and the Owls' lead extended to 10, 41-31, within the first minute of play. KSU began to close the lead before a
Grace Carstensen 3-pointer extended the lead back to seven. The Owls then gained their largest lead of the contest at the six-minute mark with the score standing at 51-40. FAU held its lead at nine through the end of the third, taking a 61-52 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
Kennesaw State made a run in the fourth quarter, keeping Florida Atlantic from scoring for over two minutes. The Owls' lead shrank to one point, sitting at 64-63 with 3:48 to go in the game. KSU took the lead with two minutes to go in the game before Jackson called game with a corner 3-pointer with two seconds left to capture the win, 69-68.

"I thought we played really well for the first three quarters, and then the fatigue set in a little bit, but I'm extremely proud of the fight and the grit to finish the game. Destyne's shot at the end of the fourth was huge. Just really proud of our team effort and our belief that we would pull it out."
NOTES AND TEAM STATS
- Four Florida Atlantic players finished in double figures. Jackson with 13, Simmons with 12, Jess Moors with 11, and Carstensen with 10.
- Vivian Onugha led the team in rebounds on the night with four.
- Simmons had a team-leading five assists.
- The Owls were 50 percent from both field goal and 3-point range on the night, matching up well to Kennesaw State's 48.1 field goal percentage and 16.7 three-point percentage.
