LYNCHBURG, Va. – Florida Atlantic's men's basketball team opened up the Field of 68 Tip-Off with a wire-to-wire 94-77 victory over Charleston on Saturday evening at Liberty Arena.
The Owls (2-0) jumped out to a double-digit lead over the Cougars (1-2) early and did not look back the rest of the way. In a typical balanced offensive showing under Head Coach
John Jakus, six players scored in double figures, with all 13 who stepped onto the court recording points.
FIRST HALF
Like the previous game, redshirt sophomore guard
Devin Vanterpool opened scoring. Five straight points from redshirt sophomore forward
Devin Williams gave the Owls an early 12-3 lead, with a dunk from junior center
Vincent Neugebauer putting the team ahead by double digits.
The lead grew to as big as 19, with a late shot from junior guard
Kanaan Carlyle sending the Owls to the locker room with a 48-32 advantage.
Defensively, Florida Atlantic did not surrender a field goal to four Charleston starters, holding them to a combined 0-for-11 shooting.
SECOND HALF
Two triples from junior forward
Xander Pintelon put Florida Atlantic up by 20 five minutes in the second half. The Owls then worked their way in the paint, with sophomore
Maxim Logue connecting on four shots in a four-minute span.
Florida Atlantic led by as much as 25 and reached the 90-point mark with a three-pointer from redshirt freshman
Liam Dayco-Green in his collegiate debut.
