BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball secured its second American Conference series sweep on Friday, earning a four-set win, 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-15), over the Temple Owls inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls improve to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in American play, while Temple drops to 11-10 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Following a back-and-forth battle to open the match, the Owls produced on a 4-1 run, following a 7-7 tie, to hold an 11-8 advantage after
Olivia Hart's first kill of the night. However, Temple rattled off a run of their own to even the match at 11-11. Following a 20-18 Temple lead, FAU scored back-to-back off kills from
Anna Hartman and
Erin Morrissey to force a Temple timeout, with the score even at 20-20. FAU took the lead 22-21 off a kill from
Kayla Richardson and a Temple error, but Temple closed the set with a 4-1 run to take the opening set, 25-23.
Temple scored first in the second, but Florida Atlantic came out firing in set two, opening the frame on a 12-2 run to force two early Temple timeouts. Florida Atlantic extended the lead to 12, at 21-9, via an ace by Hart. Temple followed with a 4-1 run to spark FAU's first timeout of the set, leading 22-13. Out of the break, the Owls capitalized on three-straight Temple errors to take the second 25-13 and even the match at one set each.
Following a tight 6-5 FAU lead to open the third set, the Owls tallied a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 12-7, forcing a Temple timeout following another Hartman kill. FAU extended its lead back to five, 19-14, following a kill from Hart and an ace from
Libby Ashline. Temple battled back to cut the Owls' lead to four, 22-18, but kills from Hartman,
Kierstin Bevelle, and Hart secured the set, at 25-19, giving FAU the 2-1 set lead.
After battling to a 9-9 tie to open the fourth, Hartman's 12th kill of the day sparked a 6-1 FAU run to give the Owls the 15-10 advantage at the fourth set media break. Temple called two quick timeouts as FAU held a seven-point advantage at 20-13 late in the fourth. The Owls closed out the match on a 5-2 run, including a trio of kills by Hartman, to earn the four-set win, 25-15.
STATS & NOTES
- Three Owls posted double-figure kills in the win, led by Hartman with a team-best 16 kills on a .484 clip, in addition to adding four blocks and four digs in the win.
- Hart and Erin Morrissey were the Owls' other double-figure scorers, finishing with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Hart finished with her eighth double-double of the season, recording a team-best 14 digs in the match. Morrisey added six kills and four blocks to her line.
- Emsley Venard dished a career-best 29 assists in the match, while also recording her second career double-double, finishing with 10 digs against Temple.
- Libby Ashline posted a match-high five blocks and added seven kills, four aces, and a dig in the win.
- As a team, the Owls dominated Temple in nearly every statistical category, outpacing Temple in kills (56-48), hitting percentage (.346-.178), assists (52-45), service aces (8-3), digs (61-49), and blocks (10-6).
- The Owls also held an advantage in side-out percentage (74 percent to 54.6 percent)
