BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball earned its third-straight sweep on Tuesday, powering past the FIU Panthers 3-0 inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
Florida Atlantic improves to 3-1 with the win, while FIU drops to 0-4 on the season.
After a slow start, the Owls battled back following a 5-2 deficit to score three-straight points off a kill from
Valeria Rosado and a pair of Panther errors, bringing things even at five all. Florida Atlantic went on a 9-4 run to lead by five, however, FIU answered back, scoring five unanswered to even the match at 14-14. Following a 19-17 Florida Atlantic lead, FIU evened things up at 21-21, but the Owls locked in to score four unanswered points to claim the first, 25-21, to clinch the opening 1-0 lead.
The Owls and Panthers battled back and forth to open the second through an 8-8 tie. Florida Atlantic started to break away, holding a 20-16 advantage late, before closing the second on a 5-0 run to take the second, 25-16, and the 2-0 advantage.
FIU opened the third on a 4-3 run, but it was short-lived as the Owls scored four unanswered to take the 7-4 lead. The Panthers battled back, producing a 5-3 lead to close back within one, 10-9, but Florida Atlantic produced a 10-3 run to break away and extend their lead to eight, 20-12. FIU closed back within six at 21-15, but they just couldn't match the Owls' offensive firepower as Florida Atlantic closed the third on a 4-1 run to claim the 25-16 win and clinch the 3-0 sweep.
Florida Atlantic will hit the road this weekend for the first time this season as the Owls head to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Red Raider Classic, hosted by Texas Tech. The Owls will begin play on Friday at 12 p.m. ET against Green Bay.
