BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball dominated the day on Sunday, earning their first AAC sweep of the season against the Charlotte 49ers, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-16).
The Owls improve to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in AAC play, while Charlotte drops to 3-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
The Owls and battled the 49ers to a 7-5 advantage to open the contest before breaking away off a 4-0 run, making it 11-5 and sparking a Charlotte timeout. The 49ers cut the Owls lead to three, 16-13, however, Florida Atlantic answered back with three unanswered points, capped off by a
Katelynn Robine service ace, to extend the lead back to six, 19-13, as the 49ers took their second timeout of the match. The 49ers tried to rally, closing within three again at 22-19, however, a Charlotte service ace and back-to-back Robine kills closed out the set to give Florida Atlantic the 1-0 lead, 25-19.
Florida Atlantic came out dominant in set two, opening the frame on a huge 13-1 run. Charlotte cut into the Florida Atlantic lead, bringing things back within nine at 19-10, but the Owls maintained their advantage, eventually closing the second on a Robine kill to win 25-14 and take a 2-0 lead.
The Owls scored four unanswered points to open the third, 4-0. Charlotte got back within three through a 7-4 Florida Atlantic lead, but the Owls broke away once more after a kill from
Maggie Allred sparked a 6-0 run to push Florida Atlantic's lead back out to nine, 13-4. The 49ers continued to battle with the Owls, cutting the Florida Atlantic lead down to five, 20-15. However, the Owls rallied once more to close out set three, outscoring the 49ers 5-1 to take the third 25-16, and seal the 3-0 sweep.
- Katelynn Robine led all scorers in the match, tallying a match-high 14 kills and turning in a fantastic .353 hitting clip.
- Maggie Allred and Natalie Depaula also finished the day in double-figures, scoring 10 kills apiece and hitting an astounding .571 and .412, respectively.
- Allred also posted a match-high five blocks, including a solo block, while Brianna Anderson led the Owls' back row with 10 digs.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a match-leading 42 assists and also recorded four blocks.
Florida Atlantic will close out its three-game AAC homestand next Friday, Oct. 4 as the Owls host the Memphis Tigers for a 6 p.m. first serve inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena and on ESPN+.
