BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls claimed a three-set sweep over the Ball State Cardinals to close out their opening weekend on Saturday.
Florida Atlantic improves to 2-1 with the win, while Ball State falls to 2-1 after receiving their first setback of the season.
After battling back and forth through a 2-2 tie, the Owls produced a 7-2 run to take a commanding five-point lead after a trio of kills from
Olivia Hart,
Madison Dyer, and
Katelynn Robine. The Cardinals kept things within three through a 12-9 Florida Atlantic lead. The Owls then responded, going on an impressive 12-1 scoring run to hold set point at 24-10. Ball State got two back, but
Madison Dyer put an exclamation point on the Owls opening set, recording the kill to close out the Owls' 25-12 win.
Florida Atlantic jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to open the second. The Owls maintained a four-point advantage through a 10-6 lead, however, the Cardinals started to rally as they scored six unanswered to take a 12-10 lead. Ball State maintained a five-point lead, holding the 21-16 advantage late in the second. Florida Atlantic battled back to close the set within a point, 23-22, following another kill from Dyer. Ball State tallied another kill to hold set point at 24-22, but the Owls were not going down without a fight. Florida Atlantic locked in over the final points of the set, scoring four unanswered highlighted by kills from Robine, including the 26-24 set-winning kill.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-2 lead to open the third. The two squads traded points back and forth through a 16-16 tie before the Owls went on a 6-2 run to take the 22-18 lead. Robine tallied back-to-back kills to push the Owls to set point at 24-19 and
Valeria Rosado closed out the match, tallying the game-winning kill to seal the Owls' 3-0 sweep, 25-20.
The Owls close out their season-opening homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 3, as they welcome rival FIU for a 6 p.m. first serve inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
