BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls' women's tennis team, ranked No. 58 nationally, hosted fellow Owl and American Athletic Conference member Rice on Monday morning. After 3 hours and 50 minutes of play, the Rice Owls came away with a 4-2 win.
Florida Atlantic opened the match, which was pre-determined as a clinch/clinch contest, with a doubles victory securing courts #1 and #2 with no need for court #3 to finish.The win pushed the duo of MIllie-Mae Matthews and
Victoria Gomez O'Hayon'd record to 11-4 on the year.
The two teams entered singles play with FAU holding the 1-0 advantage. Rice was a winner on courts #1 and #3 to take its first lead of the day.
Victoria Gomez O'Hayon evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court #2. Once again, Rice took the lead with a win on court #4, but the day was not done with two matches still in progress.
Rice looked to be in control of the match, but senior captain
Amber McGinnis fought back from being down a set and trailing set two to win the second 7-6(7-4) and force a third set-tiebreaker, a place that junior
Millie-Mae Matthews also found herself in court #6. Rice ultimately captured court #5 to clinch the match.
