BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball will make its debut in the American Athletic Conference on Friday against a familiar opponent. The Charlotte 49ers are in town for the first league matchup of the season.
Update (11:25 a.m. Friday): Friday's series opener has been postponed due to weather. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
Join us for matinee baseball on Friday as we hand out a limited-edition trading card featuring junior catcher/outfielder
John Schroeder. Going forward, a different Owls' player will be featured for every
Sunday conference game at home. Stay tuned for details on who will be featured for the April 7 giveaway.
The Owls saw their five-game winning streak halted on Tuesday at UCF. Second inning hits by
John Schroeder and
Patrick Ward put the visitors on top but offense was hard to come by for the next seven frames. The Knights took a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning and held on to sweep the season series (2-0).
Christian Adams was named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the second time this season. Adams has reached base in 12 straight games.
Schroeder reached base twice on Tuesday and scored both Owls' runs. He's reached base safely in 11 straight games.
C.J. Williams has taken the Owls' Friday night starter role and ran with it, racking up a 3.14 ERA and 4-0 record. The Deerfield Beach native has allowed just two earned runs in his last 18.2 innings. Williams made a start in Charlotte last season, going 5.2 with two earned runs allowed.
Charlotte is 10-12 and coming off back-to-back midweek losses against Davidson and Gardner-Webb. The 49ers are led offensively by junior Thad Ector with a .353 average. On the pitching side, lefty long reliever AJ Wilson holds a 2.78 ERA in 22.2 innings.
Florida Atlantic leads the all-time series 20-11. The Owls took two of three last season in Charlotte.
The Owls square up with Florida Gulf Coast at home on Tuesday before a Thursday-Saturday trip to Memphis.
