BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball bounced back into the win column on Sunday, defeating the Charlotte 49ers in four sets, 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19) for the Owls' first road win of the season.
The Owls improve to 13-9 on the season and 5-5 in AAC play, while Charlotte falls to 4-19 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Florida Atlantic and Charlotte battled back and forth to open the match, trading points through a 15-14 Owl lead at the opening media timeout. Charlotte went on a 6-3 run to lead 20-18, sparking a Florida Atlantic timeout.
Katelynn Robine got a kill out of the timeout to bring the Owls back within one, 20-19, but Florida Atlantic just couldn't find an answer to the 49ers as Charlotte took the opening set, 25-21.
The Owls jumped out to an 11-7 lead to open the second, capped off by kills from
Kayla Richardson and
Madison Dyer. Florida Atlantic continued its aggressive play, producing a 10-6 run to extend their lead to 21-13, sparking a Charlotte timeout. The Owls eventually captured the second 25-18 to even up the match at one, 1-1.
Charlotte jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open set three, but the Owls answered back, producing a 10-4 run to take the lead 11-8, sparking a Charlotte timeout. Following a 16-13 Florida Atlantic advantage, the Owls clutched up over the remainder of the set, outscoring the 49ers 9-4 to take the set, 25-17, and the 2-1 advantage.
Florida Atlantic scored six unanswered to open the fourth, 6-0, and continued their scoring streak through an 11-3 run, capped off by back-to-back-to-back kills from Robine. Charlotte rallied to cut the deficit to three off a 6-1 run, 12-9, however, the Owls wouldn't back down as they outscored the 49ers 13-10 over the remainder of the set to win the fourth 25-19 and capture the four-set victory.
- Valeria Rosado led the Owls with a season-best 22 kills and hitting an impressive .413, while also tallying her ninth double-double of the season, adding 11 digs against the 49ers.
- Katelynn Robine and Kayla Richardson also turned in double figure kills for the Owls. Robine hit .268 with a team second-best 16 kills, while Richardson tied a season-high 13 kills, hitting .400.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a match-high 53 assists, and tallying her eighth double-double of the season with 11 digs.
- Isabelle Northam led the Owls' back row, recording a match-high 20 digs, while Madison Dyer led the Owls at the net with a team-high three blocks in the win.
Florida Atlantic will close out its three-game road stretch on Wednesday, Oct. 30 as the Owls head to Tampa to take on in-state rival South Florida. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside the Corral.
